The Bully

HERE IS YOUR ANTI-BULLYING ASSEMBLY PROGRAM It starts out with a magic routine using large steel rings that go in and out of each other in fun patterns, with big band music in the background and engaging the kids. This is followed by a routine where a kid uses the wand to cause magic to work and introduces the subject of bullying. During the next few minutes children tell me things that bullies do, raising awareness as they do. This is followed by me reading a story “written by my friend Charlie” when he was their age. It details a bully stealing his lunches, pushing him, and no one helping him. The teacher calls his mother, and his mother asks him about it, he tells her what happened, and his mother tells him she and his father will talk to the school and do whatever it takes to make the bullying stop. Then I introduce Charlie, the ventriloquist dummy. In our conversation he is silly and makes fun of me as we discuss what happened to him and what he did about it. He talks about staying in a group of friends, sitting near the driver on the school bus, and being a friend to someone who is being bullied. After that story I tell the story about a bully ripping Charlie’s current events assignment. That’s the newspaper being torn to pieces in the video, and by doing the right thing – telling an adult – the newspaper is restored to demonstrate the power of telling an adult. The kids then take a quiz. I read questions from the stories off of flash cards and the kids yell the answers. As a reward for getting all the questions right they get one more magic trick. I do the escape from the wooden stocks as the finale of the show
